Earlier this year I teased that I had written a guest post for another website. It was published today at The White Coat Investor, and you can read it here: How We Built (and Paid for) a Mother-in-Law Suite.
Last year we built an accessory dwelling unit in our back yard for Marisa’s mother to live in, and the post focuses on the financial aspects of how we pulled it off. Hopefully it will be helpful to anyone contemplating a similar project. Towards the end of the post I review some of the lessons we learned.
The post was written several months ago, so I have a few updates to share. We have done a lot of work around the outside of the little house, and just this week I spent several hours building a terraced retaining wall for flower beds in front of it. We also put down weed barrier and gravel around the back sides of the house. We also poured a concrete stairwell coming off the side up to a parking pad, and it turned out pretty good even though it was our first time doing concrete stairs. (I followed this awesome tutorial from Family Handyman.) I have also made progress on the financial side, and I am about to pay back the remaining principal on that private loan from my sister-in-law.
The White Coat Investor is the best personal finance website for physicians and other high-income professionals. Personal finance websites range from super useful to clickbaity drivel. WCI occupies the useful side of that spectrum. I mentioned and linked to them in a previous post.
