Welcome to Medicine and Faith! This is a new forum to discuss topics related to health care and religion from the perspective of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
What does religion have to do with health care? One need only perform a web search using the terms ‘health care’ and ‘religion’ to find out. As you can see, this topic is a major point of discussion and conflict in society and politics today, and probably will be for the foreseeable future. The intersection of these topics has a long history that goes back millennia, long before there existed any profession of health care providers.
What unique perspective can Latter-day Saints offer on this topic? We have been interested in this subject for nearly the entire history of the Church (see the Word of Wisdom for an early example), and I think we have a lot to say about it.
My principal goal in writing this blog is not necessarily to preach religion or to win converts. Our broader culture today professes to believe in tolerance, and this belief resonates with Latter-day Saints. We believe in tolerating other people’s beliefs and practices, just as we claim the privilege of being tolerated by others (see our 11th article of faith). But it is hard to tolerate what you don’t understand, so I hope that this website will promote understanding. Tolerance is a two-way street, and this is your invitation to drive down and visit our house.
Here is my disclaimer: This website is not an official Church publication and the opinions expressed here are not necessarily the official views of the Church. However, I will try my best to be consistent with Church doctrine because I believe with all my heart that it is true. If you want to read official Church content, you should visit one of the official Church websites: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org or https://www.comeuntochrist.org.
Thank you for visiting us. I hope you will come again.
